Does American Family offer pet insurance?
American Family Insurance, commonly known as AmFam, was founded in 1927 to provide auto insurance to farmers in Wisconsin. Since then, the company has grown to become one of the largest insurance providers, ranking as the ninth-largest auto insurer and seventh-largest home insurer in the United States.
AmFam also offers a wide range of life insurance products, including whole life insurance for children, as well as special add-on pet coverage.
An overview of American Family Pet Insurance
If you have homeowners insurance with AmFam, the company now offers add-on pet coverage that provides up to $1,000 for vet fees or final expenses (i.e. burials, urns, cremation) for your cat, dog, bird, or fish. To qualify for coverage, a claim must be the result of a loss included under your policy, such as a fire. This supplemental plan also protects you from liability claims against your pet, including lawsuits for property damage or accidental injury.
AmFam’s RV insurance can also help you save money by providing coverage for your cat or dog if they’re in your RV during an accident or involved in another covered collision or comprehensive loss (such as theft, rollover, accident, or weather event). If death occurs in a covered loss, you will also be covered for burial, disposal, and replacement. The coverage comes with a $1,000 cap and extends up to 90 days after the accident or covered loss.
Is American Family Pet Insurance worth it?
Wondering if this type of pet insurance is worth it? Even though the coverage provided by American Family is different from standard pet insurance policies, and you can't get reimbursed for vet bills due to accidents or illnesses unrelated to your primary policy, it can still offer some financial protection. It also provides the added bonus of liability coverage, a benefit that most traditional pet insurers do not offer.
That said, it is only available to American Family policyholders and significantly limited in covered vet services. If you don’t already have a policy with American Family and want to look at standard pet insurance plans, consider reading through our pet insurance blog for helpful information.
