Armed Forces Insurance (AFI) has teamed up with Embrace Pet Insurance to help members of the U.S. Armed Forces protect their dogs and cats. Embrace provides strong coverage for pets and offers excellent flexibility compared to other plans on the market. Although Embrace places a few restrictions on its coverage, it’s one of the best pet insurance companies in the industry.

Pros

  • Use any licensed veterinarian in the United States
  • Covers exam fees, prescription meds, and dental disease
  • Rewards healthy pets by reducing the annual deductible by $50 following a policy term in which no accident or illness claims are reimbursed
  • 2-day waiting period for accidents
  • 24/7 access to tele-med support
  • 30-day money-back guarantee if no claims have been filed

Cons

  • Accident & Illness coverage is not available for senior pets ages 15+ enrolling in a new plan
  • 6-month waiting period before orthopedic conditions are covered (unless a waiver is completed)

JUMP TO:

Armed Forces Insurance has provided military homeowner insurance, military renter insurance, military auto insurance, and more to its members for more than 135 years. The company was originally formed by former military leaders.

Embrace was founded in 2003 and has been providing customers with pet insurance coverage since it sold its first policy in 2006. The company has partnered with several other brands, including Allstate, American Modern Pet Insurance, Geico, and USAA.

What's Covered

  • Accidents & Illnesses
  • Breed-specific conditions
  • Orthopedic conditions
  • Diagnostic exam fees
  • Dental treatments
  • Prescription medications
  • Alternative therapies
  • Behavioral disorders
  • Euthanasia and end-of-life care

Optional Add on: Routine Care

What's Not Covered

  • Lost pet advertising and rewards
  • Vacation cancellation costs
  • Breeding, nursing, or whelping
  • Obedience training
  • Cosmetic procedures
  • DNA testing or cloning
  • Routine care (unless added to policy)
  • Pre-existing conditions

Routine Care Add-On

When you add routine care coverage to your policy, you can get reimbursed up to a set amount per year for preventive costs that keep your pet happy and healthy.

Embrace Wellness Rewards work differently than other providers by reimbursing routine care costs on an annual allowance-based system. Policyholders can select a predetermined amount that they can use toward preventive services, such as vaccinations, parasite prevention, or spay/neuter surgery:

  • $250
  • $450
  • $650

There is no waiting period before you can file a claim, and you do not have to meet a deductible before Embrace wellness rewards kick in. Any remaining amount will not roll over to the next policy term.

Embrace wellness rewards cover preventative veterinary services such as:

  • Spay/neuter surgery
  • Dental cleanings
  • Annual checkups
  • Heartworm, flea, and tick preventatives
  • Vitamins and supplements
  • Fecal exams

Pawlicy Advisor Tip: We recommend adding routine care for pets under age two due to the high number of wellness visits at this age. Older pets may not save money with a routine care add-on. Learn more: Are Wellness Plans Worth It?

How it Works

You can use Embrace Pet Insurance with any licensed veterinarian in the United States. Like most pet insurance plans, Embrace reimburses you for a percentage of eligible expenses on veterinary services rendered for unexpected accidents, injuries, or illnesses (after your deductible has been met).

1. Visit any licensed veterinarian, specialist, or emergency doctor — no referral is needed.

2. Pay for the visit upfront out-of-pocket at the time of your appointment.

Armed Forces Pet Insurance Waiting Period

When you sign up for pet insurance, there is a mandatory waiting period before your coverage becomes effective, and you become eligible for claim reimbursement. The waiting period for Embrace Pet Insurance depends on the type of incident you need coverage for:

  • Illnesses: 14 days
  • Orthopedic Conditions*: 6 months (14 days upon completion of a waiver)

*The waiting period for orthopedic conditions only applies to dogs.

Filing a Claim

  • Window to File: 60 days after the next policy renewal date
  • Filing Requirements: Claim form (if not submitting through website or mobile app), itemized invoice from veterinarian, diagnosis, reason for visit
  • Average Claim Reimbursement: 10-15 days
  • Reimbursement Methods: direct deposit or check

Expert Insights

Is Armed Forces Pet Insurance good?

Pet parents who are already customers of Armed Forces Insurance should consider Embrace Pet Insurance before looking for pet insurance elsewhere. Embrace is a Pawlicy Advisor-approved provider and stands out for offering excellent coverage options, exceptional customer service, and significant discounts. With its Healthy Pet Premium Discount program, customers can save 5% in the first year and 10% in the second if they qualify.

Embrace covers dental work, exam fees, and prescription medications, which many of its competitors do not. This is great for breeds prone to dental problems like pugs, bulldogs, and boxers.

The biggest downside to Embrace Pet Insurance is its 6-month waiting period for orthopedic conditions. However, customers can shorten this waiting period to just 14 days by having a veterinarian examine the pet and completing Embrace's "Orthopedic Report Card."

Embrace Pet Insurance Opinion

“We’ve been with Embrace Pet Insurance since 2014. Anytime I had a question i got an answer within one day. I can’t even get that quick of turn around with my doctor! I would highly recommend them if you are looking for a good quality insurance for your pet.”

65% Rate Increases after only 1yr!

“After 1yr and zero claims, Embrace raised my pet insurance by an insanely 65%! They tried to justify that rate increase by telling me they need to be able to cover all of the pets and keep up with costs. Seriously, 65%?! I could understand basic inflation increases of around 6-10%, but 65% is absolutely unnecessary and horrible business. They care more about their revenue than the animals that can no longer be insured due to their greed.”
