Trupanion customers rave about the perks they enjoy, including unlimited annual coverage and the ability to pay vets directly. However, not all vets accept payments directly from Trupanion. There are also a few trade-offs that come with the benefits of Trupanion Pet Insurance.

State Farm was founded in 1922. It is now the largest property, casualty, and auto insurance provider in the United States.
Unlike most insurance companies, State Farm uses a unique sales model, employing exclusive or "captive" agents for its insurance products. This means that only agents working for State Farm can sell its insurance, and they are restricted to selling only products offered by State Farm.
State Farm began offering pet insurance in 2018 through a partnership with Trupanion, which has been in business since 2000. Customers in all 50 states and the District of Columbia can enroll in Trupanion Pet Insurance through State Farm.

Waiting Periods
When you sign up for pet insurance, there is a mandatory waiting period before your coverage becomes effective and you become eligible for claim reimbursement. These waiting periods vary by insurance provider.
The waiting period for Trupanion Pet Insurance through State Farm depends on the type of incident you need coverage for:
- Accidents: 5 days
- Illnesses: 30 days
- Orthopedic conditions (including hip dysplasia, luxating patella, and intervertebral disc disease): 30 days
- Cruciate ligament injuries: 30 days
All pet insurance waiting periods may vary by location; refer to your policy documents for an exact coverage start date.

How it Works
State Farm Pet Insurance works by reimbursing 90% of your eligible veterinary expenses through Trupanion. You are responsible for the remaining 10%, also known as co-insurance, along with the monthly or annual insurance premium.
1. Find a vet that accepts Trupanion payments when your pet has an unexpected illness or injury to minimize out-of-pocket expenses.
2. Your vet submits the invoice directly to Trupanion. They pay for 90% of covered vet costs, and you cover the remaining balance.
3. If your vet doesn't accept Direct Pay, download a claim form and submit an itemized invoice via fax, mail, or email.
4. Get reimbursed for a portion of your vet bill either by check or direct deposit, typically in as little as 24 hours.

State Farm has received positive reviews on Trustpilot as well as numerous complaints. However, those complaints are not about State Farm Pet Insurance, which is Trupanion. Instead, they relate to State Farm’s other insurance and banking products.
Most customers give Trupanion positive reviews on Trustpilot, saying the insurance has been a “lifesaver” for them when their pets are diagnosed with serious conditions. Trupanion has allowed customers to get their pets the care they need without having to worry about the costs.
Other reviewers say Trupanion’s customer service representatives are friendly and knowledgeable, and that they care deeply about customers and their pets. The reviews also say that Trupanion representatives respond quickly to inquiries.
Nonetheless, some customers complain about the cost of their Trupanion plans. They say their monthly premiums have increased unexpectedly. Trupanion’s monthly premiums may increase as pets age or if the pet moves to a new location.
